Target Audience
Anyone interested in gaining knowledge around the basics of asthma including the disease process, treatments, monitoring, patient education, and medication devices. This course may be particularly helpful to any healthcare professional that is involved in patient education or has care interactions with asthmatics.
Description
This half day course will cover the basics of asthma in terms of presentation, diagnosis, and treatment options. Participants will get an opportunity to fill out Asthma Action Plans, learn how to demonstrate different asthma devices, and learn patient self-management tools. This class is a combination of didactic and interactive learning.
Objectives
- Describe the basic pathological components of asthma, prevalence, and associated co-morbidities
- Discuss insights into asthma diagnosis and the interplay of allergies and family history.
- Identify the different pharmacologic treatments available today; be able to describe the medications use and demonstrate a variety of delivery modalities.
- Examine patient self-management tools for optimum asthma control (i.e. asthma action plans, trigger avoidance education, peak flow monitoring, and community resources).
- Demonstrate filling out an Asthma Action Plan that covers symptoms and peak flows.
- Explore available asthma education via print and the World Wide Web.
- Discuss and reflect on the participant’s possible contributions to the office’s health team in regards to asthma education and care.

Description
This practical, hands-on workshop will provide participants with knowledge, skills and tools to implement quality improvement (QI) techniques in their professional settings. The Model for Improvement and basic QI methodology will be discussed including identifying project teams, forming aim statements, setting goals, and applying Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. The Model for Improvement is a robust and versatile model and may be used in any setting and applied to any clinical or administrative function. Attendance strongly recommended for both Part 1 and Part 2 but not mandatory. Prework reading will be assigned upon registration. Textbook reading will be included.
Objectives
- Understand basic quality improvement methodology
- Identify a quality improvement opportunity in your work setting, write an effective aim statement, and set appropriate goals
- Plan a PDSA cycle
- Implement the PDSA in your work setting and analyze the results

Building upon EQuIPT Part One , this workshop will explore measuring, spreading, and sustaining your improvement efforts. These three elements are paramount to all successful improvement activities. Key features of simple, yet effective measurement and feedback techniques will be discussed as well as successful approaches to actively disseminate and sustain improvement efforts throughout your workplace. Participants will be given simple measurement tools to utilize in their work settings and will develop action plans for spreading and sustaining improvement. ** Prework will be assigned in Part 1.

- Identify successful spread and sustainability strategies
