As the director of planning and operations at NC AHEC, Thupten Norbu provides leadership on planning, program operations, contracts and agreements, and human resources.
Thupten joined NC AHEC as the assistant director of operations and planning in May 2017. He has more than a decade of progressive work experience in the nonprofit and educational settings. Previously, he served as the acting director and the associate director of the Carolina Asia Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he provided leadership and contributed to the growth of the center. Thupten also worked at The Asia Foundation’s headquarters in San Francisco, where he provided support to its 18-plus offices in Asia to develop proposals to bilateral and multilateral funders to implement development projects and programs. Prior to joining UNC, he worked with the Duke Global Value Chains Center as a researcher, where he conducted research on workforce development projects using the global value chains framework. Thupten obtained a BA in human ecology with a focus on sustainable development from the College of the Atlantic in Maine and a Master of International Development from Duke Sanford School of Public Policy in North Carolina.
