The presenter will argue that while regulatory approaches to quell the unproven market have been implemented, little has been done to improve communication to address patient misunderstandings about the safety and efficacy of unproven stem cell therapies. The presenter will provide practical steps to improve patient understanding surrounding unproven products through empathic communication that can be provided by any clinician.

Presenter:
Dr. Zubin Master is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Science and Health Policy and the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM). He is core faculty at the Maya Angelou Research Center for Healthy Communities and Associate Director of Wake Forest University’s Center for Bioethics, Health & Society. Dr. Master is member of WFUSM’s Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and the Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention. He previously held faculty appointments at Mayo Clinic and Albany Medical College, and worked in the federal public service as Senior Policy Advisor for Health Canada. Dr. Master’s research interests broadly cover ethical and policy issues related to stem cells and regenerative medicine, and to design strategies to improve health/science literacy among older adult patients who encounter medical misinformation, including the use of common consumer chatbots. He has published over 130 papers and his work has been presented nationally and internationally.

This interdisciplinary activity is free, however, you must pre-register by 10 AM (ET) on November 19th to be able to attend.
{"statustype1_pk":1
Discuss the role of clinicians in addressing medical misconceptions surrounding unproven products through empathic communication.
Exploring Ethics: Medical Misinformation About Unproven Stem Cell and Other Therapies: A Need For Empathic Communication
"address1":"Quiet Location with Reliable Internet Connectivity","address2":null
{"statustype1_pk":1
Northwest AHEC is recognized by the North Carolina Psychology Board as an approved provider of (Category A)Continuing Education for North Carolina Licensed Psychologists.
