A new online course at Eastern AHEC was recently featured on a poster at East Carolina University. The poster, entitled “An Online Introduction to Basic Simulation for Faculty: Making Simulation Easy,” was displayed as part of Medical Education Day at the Brody School of Medicine on Wednesday, April 10.

The Basic Simulation for Faculty course was created to assist interprofessional faculty at the ECU College of Nursing, ECU Brody School of Medicine, and Vidant Medical Center in the use of best practices in simulation as a teaching strategy. The goal is that all simulation areas will be using common education materials and concepts.

The course and poster were developed by Laura Bliley, MSN, RN, assistant director of nursing and allied health education at Eastern AHEC; Mildred Carraway, MSN, RN, director of continuing medical education at Eastern AHEC and ECU; Laura Gantt, PhD, RN, CEN, NE-BC, CHSE of the ECU College of Nursing; Walter “Skip” Robey, MD, FACEP of the ECU Brody School of Medicine; Tracy Langston of Vidant Medical Center; and graduate student Stephen Smith.

So far 82 participants have given the course positive reviews, with 100% saying they agreed or strongly agreed that the course met their expectations. The average pre-test score was 81 and the average post-test score was 95, demonstrating an increased familiarity with simulation as a teaching practice. Data will continue to be collected as the course is available through 2020.
